Responsibilities

As the head of the Property and Development Accounting Land team, this individual has oversight of the accounting records and administrative matters for Land projects and entities. Responsible for supervising the Land team which involves overseeing the team’s daily activities, providing guidance and support, and fostering the professional growth and development of team members. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with Hines functional groups (e.g., Tax, Accounts Payable, Finance Business Partners, Transactions) and appropriate representatives of external parties
  • Plan and coordinate accounting staffing on all current and new land projects, inclusive of special projects
  • Evaluate prospective candidates for land accounting positions and make hiring recommendations
  • Participate in weekly leadership meetings and present in Property & Development Accounting or other departmental meetings
  • Resolve concerns that may arise through the ordinary course of business
  • Standardize processes and procedures for the land platform
  • Maintain working knowledge of, and compliance with, various legal documents, including but not limited to: Loan agreements, JV agreements, Development Management agreements, etc.
  • Ensure all accounting records and reports are maintained timely, accurately and in accordance with GAAP or other basis of accounting.  Special consideration to areas such as debt modifications, acquisitions/dispositions, interest capitalization, etc.
  • Ability to handle complex (e.g. very technical) ownership/equity structures
  • Review tax projections and tax preparation workpapers
  • Provide guidance and oversight to Accounting and Project team on complex matters
  • Supervise and oversee the training and development of accounting personnel and assigned subordinate staff
  • Complete periodic performance reviews and compensation recommendations for direct reports and evaluate performance of entire land accounting team

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements include:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related discipline from an accredited institution
  • CPA required
  • Ten or more years professional accounting experience, preferably a combination of public and industry
  • Public accounting experience is strongly preferred

  • Land accounting experience required

  • Tax and/or finance experience preferred

  • At least 4 years of prior management experience required

  • Effective people management skills

  • Ability to lead, plan and manage activities and personnel to meet deadlines 

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and coordination skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Possess initiative to assume additional responsibilities

  • Exchange ideas, information, and opinions with others to arrive at decisions or solutions

  • Work indoors approximately 100% of the time

  • Work overtime as business needs deem appropriate
